Cooperative Portals in Arts
Professional artist usually work on their own. Rarely they build teams for single projects. However, art needs also (paying) audience and “afficionados”. Insitutions like opera, theater and symphonic orchestra can use portals and social networking to improve their communication with their audience but also to increase their loyalty by active participation. Most traditional art organisations have a problem to address young people. The average age of classical concerts tends to be > 70.Why not use social network technolgies the young people know?

Why not distribute concert and theatre previews for iPODs?

Why not start a blog on a concert or a new performance at the theatre?

Why not develop new methods of ticket selling for the young audience?

Why don’t the musicians in the orchestrarun a little blog for the amateur players?

The role of teams in art
A single artist certainly has a problem to catch the attention of the public. This was also so in the past. Therefore groups of artists formed schools e.g.The Hudson River School of Painting or the Second Viennese School of Arnold Schönberg. Artist use the Internet today mainly for the presentation and the distribution of their work. Virtual Artist Communities are still rare today. A good examle is the Genius Loci Lab, a group of worldwide designers.

In contrast to professional artists the scene of amateurs artists are using Internet based collaboration tools e.g. to create highly sophisticated environments e.g. to share open (non copyright music) and e.g. online music lessons for thosw which have no access to professional teachers (also due to the lack of money!). The Classical Guitar Forum is a typical example of such a community - .Thousands of guitar player in 120 countries share their music in a vital social network. The Classical Guitar Forum also has a very interesting method of user qualification in order to keep spammers out of the system.

Portals for closed comunities supporting Internet Novices
In a private research activity I implement and evaluate closed community portals and small Social Networks (e.g. Classical Guitar Society Böblingen )
It is avery interesting experience how a group of people in the age between 20 and 70 years learns how to exploit cooperative technologies. Small hosted portals may be the solution to the ever increasing exposure of people private life through systems like MySpace or YouTube. Privat Portals can provide a similiar and much better cooperation environment for cost as low as 2 $ / month for a group of 50 people.
