Genius Loci
In roman mythology, genius loci was the protective spirit of a place. Ancient roman homes had a special sculpture, very often a symbolic head, attached near the entrance or a corner of the house, which was supposed to watch out and protect the people living in the house. You will also find a ‘genius loci’ on medieval houses in areas where Romans had settled. In the Black Forrest area in Germany, close to France, the genius loci is was called “longue oreille” (long ear). It became a synonym for person sneaking around and knowing everything in town. Like a lot of other French words used in German, “longue oreille” was transformed and finally became “Loschore”. The Loschore will listen to everything going in the scene and hopefully protect this virtual place.
Today “Genius Loci” is used to describe not only the spirit of a physical place but also the spirit of a team. We will use the genius loci site to discuss new approaches to teaming and cooperation using web and portal technologies.
